Nebedaye Farm is an offshoot of Bennu farms, started in 2014 as the brainchild and labor of love of Bernard Singleton. This was originally intended to be an opportunity to provide his neighborhood with healthier dietary options and educational directives for area youth. Raised beds, horticultural education, and market stalls from which to sell some of the grown goods came next.
Bernard’s work planted seeds for the future. Sitting on 11 acres in Indian Trail, just east of Charlotte, the next chapter of Bennu Gardens and Bernard’s vision arose as Nebedaye Farms. It’s here that Bernard can spread his proverbial wings to research new plantings, continue the established growing patterns of previously grown crops, and attempt to grow crops not normally seen in our area.
On our farm tour we saw 3 different varieties of rice, ground cherries, moringa, and so much hibiscus and okra. Bernard treated us to hibiscus tea brewed from his crop that was just sublime. The season’s last blueberries had just been picked, as well as the squash blossoms, indicating a vibrant spectrum of ideas and potential.
The significance of these farming efforts is numerous, what stands out for me is Bernard is using his horticultural voice to speak for a segment of our community that has had their collective voice abated for far too long. As a community-based business, we are gratefully learning how to listen, learn, and make space for these voices. Thank you Bernard, and we look forward to more of the bounty of your labor.
Until next time,
