Chef Sam created Your Farms Your Table with the fundamental idea that supporting the entire Charlotte restaurant community – including farms, restaurants, diners, and his chef colleagues – can perpetuate continual conversations about how to support one another. The ideals of philanthropy and giving back to the community lie at the heart of Your Farms Your Table’s ethos and business model.
When the world was devastatingly impacted by George Floyd’s death in May, Chef Sam knew that he wanted to raise money to provide support to men and women of color in his community, and specifically to an organization that aligned with the Black Lives Matter movement. So Sam and Chefs Desiree Kinker of Ree’ Kreations and Jamie Barnes and Gregory Williams of What The Fries Charlotte came up with the idea to cook for awareness and created a menu and donation plan to benefit 100 Black Men of America.
On Saturday, June 21st, they prepared and delivered an extra-special dinner to 100 patrons with 100% of the proceeds going to the organization 100 Black Men of America. The evening’s menu was: charred blueberry BBQ Springer Mt Farms chicken, braised greens, jalapeno-cheddar cornbread; New Town Farms savoy cabbage salad, nectarines, chiogga beets, crunchy chickpeas, fennel, fresh cheese, red miso vinaigrette; and smoked banana cake, whipped vanilla pudding, smoked bananas, caramel, shortbread crumbs.
The whole thing was a heartening success, with Charlotteans ordering and donating to the cause and Chefs Sam, Desiree, Jamie, and Gregory completing the evening by making a $3,000 contribution to the organization.
